What Mars "first" would that be?

Unless you are talking about a manned mission - which they are decades way from being able to do as far as we can tell.
However, they are already a bit peeved that India has sent a mission to Mars.

Me spidy senses think they will try for a manned mission first, do or die.

But then me spidy senses locked me in a stupid mortgage rate and buy a cheap nasty cooker so they sin't anything to go by. And not expecting it soon.

Depends on what type of gamblers they are. Knowing the Chinese character - you could be right.

Depends on the gain. They are gambling well in the Spratly islands.

I wish the Chinese good luck, in all seriousness.
Would be good to see them throw down a moral gauntlet.

They do have the funds, where as most of the other explorations seems to have pretty much dried up.
