If only...

'Explorers Wanted on the Journey to Mars. Hike the solar system's largest canyon, Valles Marineris on Mars, where you can catch blue sunsets in the twilight, and see the two moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos) in the night sky.'

Sorry but no accountants needed Eric!

The HI-SEAS project is already simulating what Mars workers will need to do.
http://hi-seas.org/

In a tiny dome 2.5 kilometers high on Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaii, six international scientists, engineers and a doctor are living, as if they were on Mars. Messages 'home' have a delay of three-quarters of an hour before they get a reply, they only go outside in a "spacesuit", their food is stored "on board" and only replenished at the end of the year long mission. The current mission is the fourth such, and is about to end - so volunteer now!

No accountants then frown

Surely they need their tax returns doing?

Now let's consider the crew:

Test Pilot
Test Pilot
Test Pilot
Test Pilot
Accountant

Hmm...

Should I get suspicious when they ask me to pop out of the module to go to the local post box to drop off their tax forms?

Yes. I think you should retrain as a geologist, or fixer of life-support systems.

On reflection, somebody will be needed to add up how many tins of baked beans are left...

I would expect baked beans will make an ideal food stuff on Mars as one of the by-products of baked bean consumption is methane gas - and that, as a very effective greenhouse gas, will help terraform the planet.

A plan is forming...

BTW my accountant produces vast quantities of methane; pickled eggs appear to have much more potential than baked beans.

We're buidkling up a nice, healthy food manifest here. We need to notify NASA -

Baked beans
Pickled eggs

Anything else?

I get the feeling you guys are planning a Hitchhiker's Guide type scenario. Tell the accountants they will have their own spaceship. Then after it's launched, everyone else stays behind and has a good laugh.

As long as this accountant gets to go on the "proper" one. I've seen The Martian. I know what to do. And, being Irish, I'm an expert on spuds.

Vegetable curry.

Looks like it will be breathing masks on all the way... but what price free terraforming?

Baked bean counting?
Skills in growing potatoes on poo more like it.
No, really, not just from the film. Self sufficiency in some form is going to be essential.

Absolutely. I've grown some potatoes in my back garden - including a species called "Rocket". As you can see, I'm more than qualified to go to Mars.
