That's actually more or less correct, the deformation of the moon due to the earth gravity is why it's now tidally locked, ie the same bit always points towards the earth

It's also the reason why there are more Lunar Maria on the side facing the earth.

I thought that the whole point of "Flat Earth" was that it was a kind of club with a big in joke.

In other words everyone in the club tells everyone else that the Earth is flat in the full knowledge that it isn't.

As a point of interest, no educated person has believed that the Earth is flat for close to 3000 years. All ancient civilisations worked out that it was spherical with the circumference being nailed in 300BC. In later centuries "the edge of the world" was more a metaphor for the point of no return on a long sea voyage. Columbus thought that the 300BC estimate was too big and that consequently China was just across the Atlantic.

I read on Reddit that the Earth and the moon are assumed to be solid lumps, but are actually quite malleable.

The gravity of Earth actually (apparently) causes the moon's light side to stretch out towards the Earth... so I'm guessing like a less exaggerated pear shape?

I haven't looked to verify this any further (I just took Reddit at face value) but blows my mind if true!
Yep - it happens to a more extreme degree elsewhere in the solar system. The huge amount of volcanic on Jupiter's moon IO for example is caused by Jupiter's gravity squeezing and stretching the moon - generating vast amounts of heat.

Yep, I get that.

How do you prove to someone who believes the earth is "flat"
You don't even try. You just smile knowingly to yourself and raise a little pity in your heart for someone with an intellect that barely exceeds that of a rather dim dung beetle.
One day, in the not too distant future (I hope), religionists will likewise be regarded with such disdain.
It's a real shame that a topic such as this gets more responses than one on genuine science.

The internet is really dumb sometimes.
How ironic that you have contributed to this thread more than any other user?

Some people really need to take a break from trainspotting and lighten up a bit!

The thread just needs to be where the dummies hang out. Flat earthers would fit in better there.

I was hoping that this forum would be a refuge from the idiocy you find elsewhere on PH, that's all. I was obviously wrong.

And spotting irony in a thread where there isn't any is a good trick. As I have said before to others, some people on PH seem to think that posts expressing a different view should not be made. All they want to see are those supporting their views. What type of discussion forum can we have if differing views can't be expressed.

I really do think some people really struggle with the meaning of the word "discuss".

One thread in probably a thousand or so and you are up in arms about it?....seriously?

Jesus, if it offends you that much, simply pass it by, it's really not that difficult is it?

At least if I get wound up, I do it with a bit of decorum and style - unlike some.

You must mean the part when you likened someones intellect to that of a dung beatle?....very stylish i must say.

I don't know, dung beetles have a certain way about them. The Egyptians worshiped them.

(Although when you refer to "dung beatle", I hope you weren't casting aspersions on some of The Fab Four).
