The Flat Earth - Don't worry I'm not one of them

Because they would still have been built straight according to a spirit level or what ever method they use on massive building projects. Build a wall on a slope and you won't make it lean with the slope.
That does not address the situation where the curve is the same as the curvature of the earth. As devil's advocate, I could argue the span of the earth the bridge is built on is curved. That does not prove the earth is curved.
I enjoy reading this sort of stuff, if anything just to be able to see the sometimes lunatic comments (like the copied and pasted bit above).
One question I would ask is why would 'they' lie and say the earth is a sphere and not just tell the truth and say it's flat? What is to gain by saying it's round.
I know these flat earth people believe that the earth stops at Antarctica iirc but what is after that? What is beneath us if the sky is above us? Surely that has to start and stop somewhere too. Do they believe we are just on a flat plain floating around the universe?
It is actually quite interesting

The towers are built vertical. Due to the curvature of the earth they are further apart at the top than they are at the bottom. As devil's advocate, I could argue the span of the earth the bridge is built on is curved. That does not prove the earth is curved.

How do you prove to someone who believes the earth is "flat" and argues that the bridge is built upon land which itself is curved, eg straddling a hill if you like. It's not a definitive way of proving the earth is curved. It only proves that the bridge is built on a curved area of land.

You don't even try. You just smile knowingly to yourself and raise a little pity in your heart for someone with an intellect that barely exceeds that of a rather dim dung beetle.
One could take that approach, but my point was that the bridge example has other explanations. Flying West, and only West from the UK and eventually ending up back there, is a fairly simple way of proving the earth is not flat.

Why do snipers account for the curvature of the earth if the earth is flat?
Do you mean bullet drop?Alpinestars said:

You cold show them the many photos of the Earth taken from space since the 1960s - but I suppose they'd say that was all made up too. Really, these people need to be put in the Army and used as cannon fodder.Simpo Two said:

People still believe man has not ventured into space. And there are still those who believe in the geocentric model. That's harder to disprove. Simpo Two said:

Nope. Believe it's called the coriolis effect or something similar.Alpinestars said:

Simple to anyone with half a brain - but not simple to a simpleton.Flying West, and only West from the UK and eventually ending up back there, is a fairly simple way of proving the earth is not flat.

Except as previously mentioned it also works on a diskworld with north or south at the centre
I'm sure I asked for an explanation last time. How does that work? How on Earth (pun intended) do you ever get back to the UK by continuing to fly West if the Earth is a disc? Alpinestars said:

If the north is magnetic an you flew in a line of equal magnetic pull (Don't know how this would be measured, just 1 hypothesis) but couldn't you theoretically feel you are flying east around a spherical earth but actually be flying in a circle over a flat plain on the flat model?Gassing Station | Science! | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
