Oil extractor pump - a warning

Theyre not, total rubbish and wont remove all the old oil. Far better to do the job properly and a lot easier by just draining the oil at the drain plug which is what its for.
IMHO it's far easier to take out the dipstick, shove the tube in and give it a pump than jack the car up, put it on stands, and take the plug out.B'stard Child said:
I really don't get it*
How chuffing hard is it........
Depends...the sump plug on my Alfa ain't budging without battering it to bits, allen key / hex bolt hole has rusted into a lovely smooth circle...- I get the poly pipe bit (look on the side of the sump for a level sensor that and a pick up grabber tool (old coat hanger with a hook made on the end is an alternative) should help you fish it out)
How chuffing hard is it........
Edit : Being upside down probably doesnt help

Read on fella - read on - I've now got one and for cars designed to have the oil sucked out it's frankly bloody briliant
I just unscrewed the oil filter and took what I could from there....bodge job? me What I meant was I was very anti these pumps - till I got a car that made dropping the oil difficult
Now I am very pro
Any way someone has already remove your drain plug with a cold chisel _ I'd do it again

If I had a vac pump lying around I’d gladly have used it...as for the cold chisel approach, I sae the nick and assumed someone has done that. I didn’t fancy my odds of tightening it back up to correct torque like that though What I meant was I was very anti these pumps - till I got a car that made dropping the oil difficult

I just unscrewed the oil filter and took what I could from there....bodge job? me Did that many years back with my 156. Unscrew filter, start engine, pump oil out, stop engine when flow stops, fit new filter and fill with oil. Never missed a beat.
I bought an £18 oil extractor from e-bay that has crocodile clips to connect to the battery, it came from Germany and is of excellent quality. One piece pipe to go down the dipstick orifice and it did it in seconds although you have to have the oil hot. One other thing I did was marked the end of the pipe that goes down the dipstick to ensure I had the right length inserted. Then after removing the oil filter (on a Mini) drained a further 300-500ml after a few minutes.
It's a well made solid bit of kit that makes oil changes quick and simple.

I've had one of the Laser ones for years, it's so much easier than trying to get the car up on ramps to get under it. Warm the car up, stick the pipe in, go for a cuppa. Half an hour later 3 litres of oil is out. Total capacity is 4L so there's a litre of "old" oil still in there, minus whatever is in the filter, but seeing as it's so easy to do I just do the oil change more often.

I really do not miss the task of a) trying to get under the car which means getting it on ramps as its too low for the jack but it won't climb the ramps as the front bumper scrapes so it has to be on wooden planks first and then up onto the ramps argh ffs, b) trying to remove the sump plug, c) trying to get the oil into just the catch pan and not up your arms, d) trying to get the oil from the flat catch pan into a sealable storage container.

I didn’t fancy my odds of tightening it back up to correct torque like that though Remove it as however you need to & replace it with one that isn't fooked!
Reason I got mine was for my Alfa, the sump plug (bronze) was torqued so tightly by the previous twits that it trashed the thread within the sump (Aluminium alloy) so when I put it back in it spun within the thread.
I had to drain the new oil out, clean it all up and glue the plug in place with RTV black sealant. Then suck the oil out in future using a Pela. Actually it made life much easier for that model as I could undo the filter by just reaching under the front of the car.

Heaven forbid, you could always do what the lazy twunt who was there before you should have done.

I would have done that but by the time I’d got it all set under the car (I had a few different jobs on the go like painting part of the car) it wasn’t practical to drop it off the jacks, pack it back up, magically let paint dry and drive to get a new plug in the time I had put aside for the jobs.Remove it as however you need to & replace it with one that isn't fooked!
Hence, bodge

Well that is OK, because the issue is still there & you can just order another plug now you know how to fix the job properly, leave it as it is until the replacement arrives & just do the job properly next weekend.
I’ve lost count of the number of parts I have for those sorts of jobs - many for cars I no longer ownAnyone want a starter motor, brake caliper bolts, rocker cover gasket or a cyl head for a 6N polo 1.4 Engine code AEX, I have other bits for other cars but didn’t want to spam the thread

Indeed, I have a spare 5 litres of oil anyway (best to have loads lying about with a twin spark Alfa, they drink a lot) and a £4.99 plug on order from fleabay stewjohnst said:
