Just an update to this.

Garage have rung, the fins from the intake impeller have sheared off the new turbo and got lodged in the intercooler. Luckily they got no further.

So the turbo is coming off again and is going back for a refund. I have the original turbo to prove that its not missing any bits which could have caused the new one to fail. Along with receipt for new oil feed pipe etc.

Garage are supplying and fitting a new garrett turbo, but wont be done until after Christmas.

Chalk it up to experience I guess, I won't be using a recon turbo ever again.

I know, mechanic said it was lucky as it would have been an engine written off if it had got much further. Which would have meant i'd have probably got rid of the car.

I've got my fingers crossed for a warranty refund, as it had all the t&c's adhered to, new oil lines to turbo, oil/filter change/engine flush, turbo primed prior to engine being run etc. Also I have the old original turbo and everything is still intact, which means no debris from that one was left in the air intake to damage the new one.

Noted, I keep forgetting about all this new stuff. Thanks for the explanation of how they work!

Sorry to hear of the problems OP, one can only wonder how a new unit ends up in that sort of mess.

Garage reckons possibly not balanced absolutely perfectly, so caused blades to foul on edge of casing.

I've also read somewhere that garret don't supply replacement parts for these turbos, so any 'new' parts used to recondition the turbo are actually likely to be copies from the far east or similar.
