Hi,

Have just installed a Klaxon horn onto a 1914 Morris to get the authentic AWOOOGA sound. Have wired via a 12V relay with the high current side direct to the battery.


It works great when the engine is not running, but doesn't work when the engine is running. I think it may be something due to the interaction with the dynamo but can't figure out what may be happening.

Any thoughts?

The only thing I could think is the voltage would higher when the dynamo is charging,unless its miss wired and you are picking up a feed from the ignition warning light rather than a battery live so you lose the power to the relay when its charging????

If your Horn button switches positive you should have wired it like this

If you have wired the Klaxon correctly you need to check the battery voltage when the engine is running

There is a possibility that the Dynamo output is erratic and causing the Horn not to work due to an up and down terminal voltage

There is a good chance that the vehicle does not have a Control Box for the Dynamo but does have third brush regulation, have a look at what voltage control system is being used, often it is found that the charging system has been modified and a Control Box has been fitted and wired to the Dynamo

Let me know what you find and I will be able to point you in the right direction

Have you perchance earthed it to the magneto grounding wire?
Magnetos are grounded to cut the spark hence would work while engine
turned off but not otherwise.
