Ideally you should run the engine for a bit (to fill the new oil filter, etc) and then check the dip stick with the car on a flat surface. It's also worth checking it again after a few trips to make sure you haven't got any leaks.
Surely you fill the filter before running the car?

I have always done so & it HAS to be the better way that having a known high volume part of the system empty on start up!
It's not always possible to fill the filter first. For example, on my W124, the filter is upside down and on my Elise, the filter is mounted horizontally. The filter on my old Scirocco is howver the right way up and I do fill it with oil before fitting!

Have never filled a filter, not once. Not ever.I have had several cars with filters above and when in one of those 'can't be bothered' moods, I have used a pump.I just did the e46 diesel that way.Simples!

On my car (and indeed most of the cars I've owned) the filter screws in horizontally so you can't put significant amounts of oil in before screwing it on. smile

The wife's Skoda's is angled upwards, so it would be possible to at least half fill it but I've never bothered.
