Don't see why anyone would have an issue with cleaning oil deposits off an engine.

Ideally you want some engine degreaser, (Gunk is probably the most common) you also need a stiff/small brush, an old toothbrush or bottle brush are ideal.

In general you brush it in, and leave it for 20 min to break down the oil/grease, and then it will normally say hose it off, if you have electrical parts in the area don't worry too much if it just a couple of engine sensors or some such, and you are able to avoid them. If it is something more complicated like an ecu, or you really can't avoid getting water in them, then consider "bagging it up" with a polythene bag to prevent ingress.

Once the gunk stuff has been used is it necessary to hose it down? Or can it just be wiped away?

As in would gunk residue do any harm to the engine if left on there?

Also can a pressure washer be used to clean the engine?

Yes, it can be wiped off and the residue won't do any harm, but it will "burn off" which could cause a whole different issue.

If a hose is not possible, a hand-spray such as you can get from a garden centre will work pretty well.

You can use a pressure washer, however as it sprays so much more water at high pressure the likelihood of other issues with water in electrics etc. is far greater.

Diesels are earyer to clean as there's no ign to get wet but as above try to avoid high pressure washers, i (as already recomended above) use a garden sprayer with hot water to wash the degreaser off, let the engine cool befor doing it smile

Very important point that I forgot in my post, otherwise the gunk will evaporate off before doing it's stuff.

I've seen HG go due to warped heads from washing a hot engine as well, mind you that was a TR7 we had just fitted a replacemnet engine to censored if ever theer was a DOH moment that was it !
