It was one of James Mays recent programmes that taught me about it.

The number of repetitive posts is a bit overwhelming.

Anyone used these?

Any good?

I've got a set of 3/8ths wobble extensions, 3, 6 and 9in, and a set of shallow flex sockets.

Best things I ever bought.

Apologies, something to do with posting from my iPhone.

To be fair they look worth talking about. It'll be nice to get rid of my chewed mole grips.

My favourite tool is my hydraulic puller, I don't know if they've been around for years and years but I only discovered them a few years back. So much better than a traditional puller.

Always found these small sets from Halfords useful, but sadly they don't seem to sell the first set anymore

I quite like my remote hose clip pliers: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191270425938

I bought the Draper expert ones at the time and even at £40 I've had my use out of them. At £12 it's a no-brainer!

Then there's the ever-useful flexi-head ratchet spanners of course, and those plastic-coated wheel nut sockets which stop the alloys getting scratched.

One thing I've been enjoying recently are my new ratchets. My 3/8" ratchet of 20 years finally gave up the ghost the other day so I invested in a set of Snap On ratchets (RAT80). The pack comes with a 1/2" S80 handle, a 3/8" F80 handle and a 1/4" T72. The larger two are from their Dual80 range and have 80 teeth - the fine action is a real pleasure to use and I'm really disappointed I didn't buy these earlier. Aside from felling nice, the small increments are very handy in tight spots.

I'm not suggesting that it's appropriate for the home mechanic to blow £250 on ratchets but I saw that Halfords sell a 72 tooth 3/8" handle for £20 - got to be worth a look... http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/spann...

This, for putting the stupid retaining washers on brake shoes, is the best £7 I've ever spent

Yes it's £9.63 now but the time saved over arsing around with small mole grips etc is unbelievable (granted I'm not very good at tasks that need intricacy / coordination)

Plusgas has helped me undo stubborn bolts a number of times.

Think I'll be ordering one of those borescopes!

Plusgas is fantastic. I used it today on turbo downpipe nuts that last turned 20 years ago in the land rover plant in Solihull.

5 minute soak and off they came. Usually I'd need to put the oxygen acetylene on them.

+1. I bought a set as there is only 1 tool that can reach the clips on a Boxster AOS. And I've used it repeatedly since especially on the XKR which has loads of these clips all over the supercharger. Worth every penny, makes releasing and moving those irritating clips a pleasure.

I'm cheap, so use "Loosen up" from Wilko cost £1 IIRC.

If you want to be really cheap, mix up diesel fuel and vinegar as it'll work as well as Loosen Up fluid.

Paint thinners and ATF does the trick too.
