I'm rebuilding my starter motor. Should I use any grease in-particular for the planetary gears ? I guess any would do given its short usage time, but is there any that's better to use in the confines and proximity to an electric motor and brush dust ?
Thanks

My 2p would be on a dry lubricant like graphite unless there is no chance it could be flung onto the flywheel/clutch area.

I used LM grease when I rebuilt the starter on one of my cars as it kept sticking. I cant comment on all starters but the the gears on the one I rebuilt were totally sealed away from the windings so there shouldn't be any cross contamination. Obviously don't grease the starter gear as that might contaminate the clutch.

Starter still works 7 years on.

Bought a little tube of graphite lube as the motor sits right behind the gears.
Thanks

I use motorcycle chain lube whenever I rebuild a starter motor. Never had to do the job again. smile
