i have a 07 daihatsu terios 1.5 (petrol) 22k.

engine cut-out on 3 occasions after driving less than 2 mile.

no dash lights & fuel gauge reading (ignition off) zero - main lights radio ok & it will crank over ok.

dash will return to normal engine will start after 3 min or 15 min.

MIL only lit on the first occasion but not on the others

rac rescue guy only found dtc u0156.

drove to official dealer today (no probs) & they also found no fault codes whatsoever with their specialized gear.

they also drove it for 25 mile with no problem.

would it be worthwhile for me to buy a scanner & keep it connected?

obviously it's a potentially dangerous fault & i'm reluctant to let my wife drive it.

any input appreciated?

Petrol?

Really need to see if it looses it spark next time, my guess would be crank shaft sensor

thanks for your reply - yes - petrol.

good suggestion but i think the "dead dash" is throwing everyone.

someone suggested that because of that it could be clearing any dtc's.

my main problem is safety - if it cannot be fixed then i can't sell it to anyone also it's too good to scrap.

also unfortunately "replace & try" is not an option due to parts availability.

Could be all sorts of things - at the risk of stating the obvious intermittent faults can be a real sod to track down.

Dodgy ignition switch? Some switches wear prematurely, especially if there are loads of keys hanging on the keychain.

Check the battery connection to ensure they are clean and secure.

If your saying all the dash instrumentation is dying at the same time as the engine, then it points to an electrical problem cutting power to the ECU as well as the dash. That's why it is cutting out and that is why there are no error codes.

Start with the basics, how old is the battery and are the terminals nice and clean and tight?

Start with the battery and alternator leads, check the clamps are clean and not cracked, pull at the earth leads, including between block and body whilst the engine is running.

Wobble the key whilst the engine is running, if you can reach the wiring behind the switch give that a tweak too, next check the ecu connections are secure dry and clean, then have a look at the fusebox connections.

Do the same with crank and cam sensor wiring, in fact wobble every bit of cable you can see, it's not very high tech but it is free and shouldn't do any harm.

If you can find a mechanic with a scanner that does data logging it might be worth a try.

My guess is ignition switch, these can wear out especially if a heavy bunch of keys has been dangling for years .

Does your car have an engine management relay? Very common fault on certain model Bentleys which gives the same symptoms. Just a thought.

had this problem recently, albeit a different car. would run perfect for ages, no problems, then randomly cut out. car would turn over but wouldn't fire. 20-30 mins later, fire on the first turn. ended up fuel pump relay. new oem one fitted and all perfect.

the give away was switching on after it cut out, no buzz from the relay / fuel pump. sometime hard to hear if passing traffic etc.
