I've just bought a car with bubbling under the paint on a few small patches on the rear arches, and fancy having a bash and prepping them for paint myself (I won't be painting, though).

Is there an idiot-proof guide somewhere to this?
My initial view was to work down through grades of sandpaper by hand (perhaps even finishing with W&D), then treat any remaining rust, wipe down and prime.

Beware of restorers syndrome! Or you'll soon be doing a nut'n'bolt disassembly and rebuild!

"Bubbling" rarely means surface rust under the paint. Usually it has penetrated from beneath, as the metal has been corroded and lets in the moisture from behind, so there WILL be much more damage than you expect. Have a look, if it's possible, behind the panel, give it a good wire brushing, and unless you want to start car restoration, spray with WayOyl or similar to keep any more water out.

Good luck!

Any rust will need grinding back to clean metal or it will just come back, i find a dremel with a pointed type grinding stone good for this.
Ive never had any success with kurust and similar products even when applying to surface rust.
