Shame your not near Herford i do 3 or 4 cam belts a week, going through the job with somone who's done it before IS a great help (thats why shcools have teachers after all) mind you you wouldn't have wanted to be here for the 106 1.5D cam belt, took 2 hours to get the water pump out the frikken block so you would have been on tea or hammer duty for a ages
Passat you dont need to fully remove the front, i made some pins to fit in the holes in the front crash bar to sldie the whole front end forward to give access to the cam belt, it's the way they do it at the dealers and the quickest way IMHO.
3-4 cambelts a week!!? You must be able to do it blindfolded by now.Passat you dont need to fully remove the front, i made some pins to fit in the holes in the front crash bar to sldie the whole front end forward to give access to the cam belt, it's the way they do it at the dealers and the quickest way IMHO.
so many differant configurations you never really know what to expect till you get in there, the basics are the same, you either need locking pins or use tippex to mark the belt and pullys but less and less cars come with fixed pullys nowdays so locking pin sets are essential, and most differ from engine to engine so lots of tools you only use once a year
For instance the 106 is a pee easy job, no pins needed, the crank pully for the Aux belt unbolts without needing to undo the big (and fooking tight) crank pully bolt and no need to remove the engine mount whereas say an astra 1.7 TD needs a lot more doing, like removing the O/S engine mount as it runs through the timing belt and cover ! TBH the changing of the actuall belt is normaly the easy part of the job !
I do miss changing pinto cam belts, now them i can do blindfolded (if the crank pully comes off that is !!!)
You tube is your friend, search, watch, do, i even take vids into work on a tablet if i've not done one before, we rebuilt a gearbox last year using a YT vid as a guide, of course it helps if it's a good vid
One hint i will give is, on YT, eric the car guy, watch him, he's good, you'll learn a lot and stay clean into the bargin
