Hi,
a couple of questions relating to the Land Rover 300TDi...

1996 Defender presently at 268000 miles.

ENGINE
Engine oil (10w40) and filter (Mahle) changed regularly at most with 6000 mile intervals.
On starting from cold the oil warning light takes a moment to extinguish so I decided the best first step would be to measure the actual oil pressure and may as well have a gauge in the dash (more useful than the clock which can no longer be adjusted!).

There are a range of VDO sensors which combine oil pressure low switch and analogue gauge:
https://www.vdo-instruments.com/sensors/pressure-s...
What set-point for the warning contact should I go for? I was thinking around 12PSI...

Alternatively should I be getting oily and removing the sump to check the big end and main bearing shells, oil pump clearances etc?

Does anyone know where I could find a torque / power curve for this engine - I've found nothing on the internet so far.

DRIVELINE noise
I recently replaced the oil seal on the Salisbury rear axle, first go I hadn't torqued the pinion nut sufficiently to achieve specified pre-load. Second attempt all well and no whining, excessive backlash or heat. Oddly though there is now a pronounced whine at 70mph, not at 65 or 68 (as close as possible to tell from the speedo). I am not sure whether it is the rear axle or elsewhere but it didn't do it before and as the rear axle was the last disturbed thing...

First job - drain the oil and check for debris. Any other suggestions?

Hainey

Set aside a pair of hours, grab a cuppa and some hob nobs and hit up trail fitters toolbox on youtube.

All the answers you seek are there, and the bloke has a really good presentation style as well.

Enjoy.
