Got hold of a 2006 Nissan Xtrail Aventura as a general dogsbody - does the job well.

Came with roof bars and I want to take then off as I'm not using them at the moment, they're noisy and they can't help with economy.

They're official Nissan ones and it came with a key that fits the rear bar on each side but not the front one.

The serial number on the barrels are the same and match the key - I can't fathom as to why it won't work. The previous owner never had any other key but never tried to take the bars off. The key will only go in half way on the fronts.

Is my only solution to get a locksmith to sort it which will be a cost and will render the set of bars useless?

Squirt into keyhole and repeat until key turns

I've given it a quick try with juice but I'll try again. The locks are clean, the resistance is exactly the same on both sides of the front, super smooth on the rears.

Often take a little while and patience, leaving overnight also helps.

Good luck

P.S. once removed, if refitted grease the locks to aid subsequent removal.

I've just gone and had another try - the lock is as clean as a whistle - there is very obvious metallic solid resistance - the key simply isn't the correct one regardless of the markings - it's exactly the same on the other side.

Anyway - copiously sprayed up and will leave overnight to tick that box.

Ah, in that case, it maybe a case of getting the manufacturer and the lock number, and seeing if you can source a key;

All barrels have the same serial number which matches the key.

That's why I'm somewhat miffed.

For reference;

Try some proper penetrating fluid - PlusGas - or something like Freeze and Release. WD40 has its uses but I'm not a fan of it for freeing seized items.
Be worth giving a Nissan dealer a ring just to check that the same key should do all 4 locks.

Sounds like one or more of the tabs inside the barrel has seized which won't let the key insert fully. Very common on locks if they haven't been used for a while. In the past I've had limited success with obviously lubricating it profusely but also using a lock pick or paper clip/similar to try and excerise the tabs inside the barrel to free them up (this is difficult if you've not done if before)!

Failing that as you've suggested a locksmith or forced removal but if the latter, don't expect to be able to reuse the locks.

Ty - I'll keep giving it a go. It's weird how both the front barrels feel exactly the same, ie; the wrong key.

Agree.. Penetrating oil is the stuff for this... Squirt it in for a few days.... Also, tap the barrel outer edges gently with a flat headed punch and small hammer. Gently though... The small shocks will help the oil penetrate. Patients willl pay off with this one....

Try tapping the end of the key lightly with a hammer too.

Will do. Both barrels were liberally squirted this evening.

Will do the same in the morning.

Do you have a power tool that creates vibrations?
(Behave yourselves you mucky buggers!).
After soaking in plusgas try the tool to see if the vibrations help.

How did you get on, OP?

To me, that has the look of a Nissan branded Thule system.

If you are not sorted, might be worth taking a punt on acquiring a new key from the likes of eBay?

Nah, same.

What key would I order as the serial numbers are the same on all the locks?

Try contacting Thule - they generally have keys N001 - N200 so I suspect that's who makes your bars.

If you Google Stuck Thule Lock you'll find you aren't alone, lots of people get them jammed.

I still think it's just the internals stuck after so long sitting out in the elements but not sure how you're going to fix it if it is all rusted up inside. Might need to drill them out.

Cheers, I'll keep trying.
