MOT Garage scissor-lifts

Wonder if anyone knows the answer to this?
Whenever I've taken my car in for test at a council place, they've had the usual drive-on ramp/lift, which then goes up in the air of course.
But, they also have had something that slides along the actual lift itself (whilst it's up in the air), and I think they wind it up and down, and it lifts either both front wheels or both back wheels off the ground.
It's NOT hydraulic, because they wind it (exactly like the old wind-up car windows?
Unfortunately, I've never thought to ask what it's called!
Does anyone know what it's called?
