Due to working away a lot of last year neither mine or the wife's cars have done much mileage, as in half their service intervals or less, so I'm thinking it's worth just doing an oil change and nothing else.

Are these suction pumps to get the oil out worth it compared to just dropping it out of the sump plug?

If you have a under tray to remove for access to the sump then yes , otherwise jacking one side up and using a drain pan is quicker and may
help you get more oil out ...

I've heard the opposite - that suction pumps get more out the sump than dropping the plug, as some is always left behind? Which is why main dealers all use suction pumps now?

I bought one - a Pela on Amazon for ~ £38 and it's great, used it for power steering fluid and getting water out of an otherwise in accessible place. I would get one, but would recommend still changing the oil filter at a cost of about £6 why not?

I'm not convinced you do get more out with a pump, simply because the last time i used one i removed the sump plug after and got another 3-500 ml of oil.
