Starter Motor Bendix Lubrication

Hi All,

The Bendix gear on my starter is a bit gummed up, so doesn't always engage flywheel properly.
Read a few things saying you shouldn't grease it etc. What is best thing to clean it up with, just WD40?

Clean it with what you like. Brake cleaner best.
Lubricate it with Graphite powder.

Any grease will attract dirt and clutch material wear.
