Just received the following text from Sarah.

Hi its Sarah. Could you do me a favour? I had a small accident and broke my fibula. I'm stuck at the hospital. Can you text me back once you get this message x

Now I see it is a scam - the number is very well known on the online who calls me sites. I have no idea who Sarah is - the number is not any of the Sarahs I know.

But what is the scam? People saying they have been scammed for £40 etc.

Happy to post the number if needed.

Premium rate text number maybe? (Texting back subscribes you and you get a bunch of messages back and forth that all cost a small fortune)

Initial message is the bait, you take the bait by replying and then get they feed you the story. You fall for the story and end up getting hooked, when you send them the money they've reeled you in.

Textbook phishing method.

Do this & post up the response!!

In retrospect don't, it might be a premium rate as someone said above. Perhaps its one of those things where you are deemed to have "opted-in" to receive messages by responding and they then send you further texts at £3 quid a time with no way to cancel.

I don't understand how you can be scammed. That's a normal number, so replying will not incur any additional charges.

(there is a thread of whocalledme saying £40 scam ...)

Someone in work had a similar thing. They end up asking you to send them a mobile top up number as they are out of credit.

How would they be texting you if they ran out of credit? hehe Still.... Some people must be foolish enough to fall for the scam.

OP don't reply and block the number to be safe.

Sarah texted me a few weeks ago too. She had broken her fibula that day too. Obviously clumsy as hell.
