Just bought some new table lamps (which came with normal fused plugs mounded on).

I want to use them with 5amp round pinned plugs which aren't fused.

Any issues? Just worried that there are no fuses but I guess if there were any issue the circuit breaker would trip?

Cheers

They will be fine, just check the circuit has the correct breaker, usually 6A

I wondered why my Sitting room had x2 round pin sockets
and a spare light switch.
now I know the two are linked and we have some low wattag elights plugged in switchable from the main light switch, thanks for raising the ?

You could use the round pin plugs with fused shaver plug adapters, although you would have to upgrade the usual shaver adapter's fuse rating.

I wasn't aware builders are installing 2 pin sockets. What if the table lamps are metal? What will you do with the earth wire that is in the 3 pin plug?

I think the poster has the round 3 pin plugs which are earthed. (2 pin are only for shavers etc)

Oh sorry, thanks. I thought those had died out decades ago.

When I rewired my house I out a 5a socket either side of the chimney breast for a stand lamp and a table lamp with a switch by the main light switch rather than having to have alcove lights. Ive also been a bit naughty and made a 5a to 13a adapter (but 5a sockets still only on a 6a breaker) so that at Xmas time I can plug the tree in and turn it on/off with a light switch rather than crawling under the tree.

They are actually these
http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-elec/5a-plug/mains-plug...

and no they haven't died out- the apartment is only three years old and they link to a dimmer light switch on the wall.

The light base is metal but cable has no earth.

However for some reason they aren't working- you touch the base to turn them on and then touch to dim. I can hear a click but the bulb doesn't light. Not sure if it's a combination of a dimmer switch on the wall and a dimmer in the lamp??

Yes it will likely be the two dimmers, I'd change the wall dimmer to a switch.
