I've swapped a few MX5 engines, kit car engines and a Volvo S60 engine on my driveway with just a hoist and basic tools, its' not that hard to do really, mostly just common sense. The main thing is to take loads of photos as you take it apart and bag bits up with labels. Having a helper is good when you're actually raising the old engine out or lowering the new one in (esp if it has the gearbox still on).

When you raise the bonnet and look at the mass of wires and pipes it looks daunting, but start removing parts and very soon you're just left with a large lump of metal to lift out, and once you've done that you realise that it was nowhere near as bad as you expected it to be.

And the satisfaction from doing it yourself is just wonderful, added to which it gives you huge confidence in future should there be any problems or maintenance as you'll know exactly what is there and how it's assembled.

A few years ago I needed a engine replacement for my R56 Mini. BMW wanted £4k for a new one. I sourced an exchange engine from a specialist breaker in Manchester. It cost about £1100 and came with a 6 month warranty. My local indie fitted it. Final cost was about £2400. The donor engine had 22k on the clock, mine had 66k.

Well.... for me... it was going to be costly.
I had a 2013 BMW M135, with 45k Miles on the clock, non modified, full service history, well looked after it was my pride and joy.

Long story short, it turned out my big end bearings had gone, When the engine was warm i was getting a horrible knocking sound, as if someone was hitting the engine with a hammer. Got louder with rev's.

I took it to a BMW Specialist, very knowledgable and helpful, who diagnosed the big end bearings.

The quote for a new engine from BMW came in at £12k, and newly refurbished engine at £9k, and a full engine rebuild at £6k, whereby the specialist takes the engine out and a company comes and collects it and does the rebuild.

In the end i traded it in to WBAC having disclosed the issues when booking the appointment over the phone, but as the car was still cold during the appointment it didn't make a knocking noise so he wasn't bothered and i got £13k for it.

Edit to add, this happened just before lockdown

Full engine rebuild for 6k? Thats pretty good so would the engine basically be brand new, still not a cost id like to swallow though.

Nope, it would be original engine, apart from crankshaft, bearings and possibly rods, but yes i suppose it would be fully stripped and checked i guess, as you say, i wasn't prepared to swallow £6k

Did you look into doing an engine swap with a used engine?

to be honest, the engine going was the straw that broke the camels back. i always knew i would need a bigger car for an ever expanding family, so by this point i had already sunk £1.5k into the car, and decided to cut my losses. I've had it for 5 years, and really needed an estate sized car, therefore didn't look at every possibility to getting it back to its former glory.

My problem i experienced was 'rare', its not common for this to happen to these engines, they are renowned for being bullet proof, including the B58. If i could turn back time, i would have taken out extended warranty (obvs), but also changed the engine oil more frequent than what the I-Drive says. I only ever starting getting problems after it went in for an oil service.

Depends on the car/engine. I had a modified Rover 200 in the early noughties and got it to the point where I wanted to swap the 1.8 k series for a 2.0 turbo from a Tomcat. Came to the conclusion that the end result would not be effective so I sold it and bought a 200SX S14a instead.

I did have the engine replaced in my Focus ST mk2 as the cambelt went and took the valves with it. Ford wanted £10k fitted for an official recon lump but I got a second hand engine from a breakers and got a local trusted garage to fit it for c£2k all in (an RS engine would have been £2k from the same place). It drove better than it did before so I modded it to stage 2 soon after and kept it for over a year. Great car.
Would any garages source and fit an engine and supply warranty etc? Eg if it was a bmw would a bmw indy supply and fit a used engine.
I guess so but it wouldn't be cheap. The 2.5 5 pot was £1200 delivered from a breakers on the south coast, mileage was estimated at 70k but I had the thing bore scoped and checked over before fitting. A bit of a chance, but worth it considering the £8k I saved from having Ford sort it out for me...

Like the others on here I have done older cars back in the day
The newest I have done is a 1987 Renault 21
I would never attempt a modern car with all these new fangled computers and young people and stuff !!

Do you not just unplug the ECU?

Holy thread resurrection!

My 2011 W639 RWD Vito is currently at a Merc indy to fix a leaking injector (number 3 towards the back). Engine is on 214k

At the end of day 1 the garage has called to say that the injector was still stuck but they were going to keep at it.

I'm just wondering for the sake of giving me options what a ballpark cost to source and fit a used, lower mileage replacement engine is (prob clutch at same time)?

cheers
