Why take the risk, get the ones with the safety pin
Because with most of the kind with safety pins I'm rather leery of the construction of the lower part of them, though I have seen some older ones that were pretty hefty.InitialDave said:

I'm on about the ratchet type WITH the safety pins.Best of both worlds surely.

I feel those are likely "better", as the legs are made from 90 degree angle, so are going to be more resistant to buckling if accidentally thumped, and I wouldn't put those in the same category as the Halfords £15 "2 tonne" jobs.Best of both worlds surely.

But I'm the guy using 6 ton stands to support a kei car...

There was a big fuss a while ago because a batch got into the market with a poorly made ratchet mechanism that could slip. I think the angle of the teeth was wrong, or the edges weren't shaped properly, such that the latch wasn't held positively in place.
Just to confirm what you're saying Green V8S, when I heard about the harbor freight axle stand recall, I became very wary of my own as they had a similar design. I would have been willing to throw them in the bin.I even asked on an American mechanics forum who were discussing the recall and they all reassured me that the problem was specific to the harbor freight ones being defective.
Once I saw a video of the harbor freight ones, and compared them to my own, it removed all my wariness about using my axle stands of the same design.
From what I saw from the videos, those harbor freight axle stands would hold the car up with a ballhair of engagement. Fortunately mine have a large section of engagement and I can't see how they could fail beyond the usual deterioration due to age/rust.
