Which battery?

My dad has been unable to use his car for a while and it is flat as a pancake

I want to get a new battery for it but it’s not clear what I need. Nothing in the handbook and the sticker on the battery doesn’t seem to match up with anything I can find online. It’s not stop start AFAIK and it’s pretty small

Any advice on exactly what I should be looking for? Will any 60ah battery the right size work? The online tools (a la Halfords, etc) are suggesting 45ah or 50ah.

The car is a 2017 Vauxhall Viva auto and this is the battery:

That battery is AGM so I would replace it with an AGM.
You do need to find the right one, not just any 60AH will do as it needs to be the same physical dimensions.

Put the reg into Tayna batt website and see what they suggest, make sure you select AGM ones. Then check the physical dimensions to make sure they recommend the correct one (I have experience of them getting it wrong).

Thanks for the reply. I hadn’t heard of Tanya but just tried that and it recommended a 50ah battery from the reg. dimensions look good and doesn’t look like AGM:

Isn’t AGM just the battery technology? The car is not start stop (which I understand needs to be AGM) so is this essential or recommended?

Tayna are great but don’t always have a comprehensive list. You can try other sites for reference such as euro car parts (always have promo codes on), the exide app, the varta site etc.

OP you’ve answered your own question there. Any same size same rating battery will work.

I am not familiar with Vauxhall so there may be radio security codes, having to leave the driver door open to prevent an immobiliser issue to whether the battery needs to be registered to the car. Registration is dealt with via diagnostic software to tell the car there is a new battery so it doesn’t overcharge it.. but having a look online briefly this might not apply as the car has a ‘’smart alternator’ that feeds a wanting battery accordingly so you should be fine but I’d research it a little more or ask on here.

Lastly, I brought back a battery from the dead this week using a ctek charger.

A longer term solution needs to be in place else he might lose a new battery...

Thanks for the info

The plan once I get a battery on the car is to get it MOT’d (expired) and sell it for him so future proofing isn’t a worry for us

So, in summary, a 60ah battery the right dimensions and should be good to go? (Assuming we get away without needing coding)

Yep like for like. Same size amp hours (Ah) and battery dimensions. Everywhere I look it seems to be that the alternator is smart. So it takes care of recognising whether the battery is old or new. Sounds more simple than a BMW where a battery sensor tells the alternator what to do etc.

Finally got around to ordering a new battery for my dads car

Unpacked it this morning and there are labels and warnings all of the wrappings saying to remove the transit plugs before use

I have looked and cannot see any transit plugs. I would expect red on opposite sides near the top of the battery if they were there

The battery is and Exide AGM/VRLA which I got from Tayna and it seems Tayna put the labels and warnings on when they wrapped it for despatch

Could it be they just label all of them to be safe regardless of whether there are vents/plugs or not or am I just being dim because I can’t see them?

Post a few photos of the new battery. The vents will be near the top, usually to the side.

Actually, forget that - just had a message from Tayna:

“I am very sorry about this.

We have had some new starters recently.

I can confirm that the EK600 is an AGM battery and doesn't have any transit plugs to be removed.

AGM batteries shouldn't generally have vent plugs as the are usually sealed

That’s what I originally thought until I opened the packaging and found stickers and leaflets saying there was

The supplier has since confirmed that this was a mistake and there are no vent plugs
