I have an ELM327 16pin OBDII cable reader that I used on my Fords and I've read that it doesnt work with VCDS lite (or does it?!)

My EML came on today on my way home & I want to have the code read ASAP, can anyone recommend a free software that will work with my OBDII so I can at least see if I need to pay for either better software or into a shop for a bells & whistles scan

Torque should do it if you have an android phone/tablet.

ETA: If you decide to go for something less generic, OBDeleven is fairly cheap and I've found it to be pretty good for my wife's Skoda.

Ah is yours a cabled ELM327? Mine (well it's a clone, not a real ELM327) works fine with Torque but it's a bluetooth one.

It was a cabled device.

To put this to bed I had a mechanic mate scan it & returned a P0430/001072 code as detailed here:

I presume that the sensor is post cat?

Yes, most likely the post-cat lambda sensor isn't working properly. Other possibilities are the pre-cat sensor, a duff cat or a small hole in the exhaust.
