All this talk of waiting to tip and the time wasted at the depots got me thinking of the quickest load I ever picked up.

I arrived at Stewart's Cream Of The Barley warehouse in Dundee and was told to back the container up to the loading bay.
12 minutes later I was told to draw forward so that they could close the doors and seal them. I was then told their record was 10 minutes 48 seconds to load a 40' container.
If only more companies had the enthusiasm and speed of these boys we might not be in such financial turmoil today
One of the quickest wholesaler's I go to is Lansdell in Whitstable. The two lads on the forks even help to undo the curtain straps. Normally in and out in 20 minutes with your notes back in your hands. Blinding firm!!

I've never seen it for myself, but back when I used to work in a transport office (getting on for 8-10 years ago), we used to do a collection from somewhere in the Birmingham area (might have been a DC in Hams Hall). The drivers said that the trailer wheels would be 'clamped' or restrained by wedge type things that lifted out of the ground, then they'd load all 24-26 pallets onto the trailer in a single hit. I believe it was a fully automated picking and loading operation, and it was just a huge machine that rolled/lifted all the pallets at once.

The drivers said that they had to sit in the cab during the loading operation (since it took minutes), and that they could feel the whole thing sink as the load was rolled in.

No mate, have used MJD's in the past and assumed it was MJD delivering to Lidl.

You must work for another Kent based haulier?

I've only been working for the firm for 18 months, so won't know anyone in history.

I do indeed, well I run the European part of our company, don't get too involved with UK haulage thankfully!
