Ok, so I will keep the ability to legally drive a 7.5 tonner (useful for moving house!) privately but if I want to drive professionally again in the future I either have to do 35hrs training before September 9th or (post Sept 9th) I'll need to do the 2 courses as well as 35hrs is that correct?

Just the 35 hours

Thanks for the info... in that case I shall do nothing now and just do the 35hrs if I ever want to go back to driving commercially. Cheers.

You sure can do that - the 5 years LGV commercial driving entitlement will start from when you complete the last of the 35 hours

There will be many like you which may cause a shortfall of occasional drivers in the 7.5 tonner market

Which very part time occasional driver wants to take 5 days and pay between £130 and £300 for 35 hours to earn a little now and again?

£55 + VAT and disbursments. £75 to most of us. 10%, or less, than the initial DCPC course fees.

Initial mod 4 is usually about £250

35 hours of dcpc can be done in a one week residential place in north wales for £130 all inc

R0G... I hope you don't mind me asking but I'm a little confused by all this.

I passed my standard UK driving test in 1994, so I have C1, C1E, D1 and D1E entitlements (according to my license, entitlement runs until 2047)

Whilst I don't currently drive for a living, in the past I drove a 7.5 tonner for a local transport company and this is always my fallback employment.

Your post above reads as though unless I do some sort of course before September 9th I will lose my C1 entitlement, is this right?
As I understand it:

You don't lose your C1 and you can drive upto 7.5t but not commercially. To drive commercially you need the cpc...

Topical of this country you need a licence for a licence for a licence...

A DCPC can be bought from Driverhire for the price stated.

Is that for 7 hours or 35 hours?

I'm exempt from this nonsense as I only drive special vehicles. I do lose the employment safety net of the class 1, but I haven't used it for 20 years anyway. Blocking the route back to 6 day, 90 hour, remember me kids?, weeks away from home will cause me to lose not a moments sleep (in my own bed). It's a stter for rest of you though, paying to prove you can do what you've done for decades. Reminds me of the CITB/CPCS and the 'get your employer out of jail free' card of competence, proof coming in the form of cheque or debit/credit card.

£75 for the whole shooting match Roger. If this is what providers had charged from the outset then everyone would have one already...

That's a good price for a piece of plastic. I still think it's an insult to drivers and a money making scheme, just glad I did it free through work. I know of a couple of old hands that have chucked the towel in over this load of bks !

Yes, the real insult comes to those of us who have a real CPC, which doesn't excuse the requirement.

I will take it all seriously when I cant do Day One x5 and still get the qualification card.

I will probably do it though because it means that for £75 I will still be able to run away and be an HGV driver. Without it, its just another useless category on my licence.

The Driver hire price is for SEVEN hours only not 35 hours

The clue is the upload fee because that is per 7 hours

Please call them to confirm if anyone disagrees

New information makes this a lot more interesting. Can you provide further details, experience/opinions?

Not been there - only seen it advertised
It was £149 not £130 = http://www.recoverytech.co.uk/ - but it included 4 nights shared residential
