Trucks have had engine brakes since the 60's, the reason it's called Jake Braking is because in the US the main manufacturer of engine brakes was Jacobs, this was soon nicknamed the Jake Brake and the name stuck. Over there you can opt to have a certain manufacturers braking system whereas here you get whatever the truck maker fits, usually their own system.

Jake Braking is banned in a lot of built up areas because of the noise it makes through the straight through pipes most American trucks run

I've only ever driven trucks with exhaust brakes, some of our Volvos will stand on their nose with the exhaust brake and some are useless. I think my truck has some form of engine valve retarder rather than exhaust brake and it's less than useless.

It's a fan boy thing to do.
Most other lorry drivers think it's a ttish thing to do as well.
+1,

Most of the Scania's I see doing it don't need to worry about needing to see out of the window to check their mirrors as nothing is going to pass them and get to the ferry first anyway....................

PS : any chance it was you on the M56 this afternoon Stuntman? About 2pm joining from the M6/ Lymm. Passed a white Volvo with fridge, euro outfit on an 05 plate? Thought of you from that picture on Skem....

When I used to drive the trucks (as opposed to sitting in the office like I do now) I used to pull the offside curtain to stop the sun getting in my eyes all the time. I never considered it to be particularly dangerous as I was always pretty aware of what was around me all of the time. Granted if things went badly wrong and I did have to swerve I might have had restricted view, but if it came to that it wouldn't have much mattered what was to my right, I'd be going there regardless.

I was lead to believe that the Volvo engine brake is basically a jake brake. I've had limited experience with jake brakes in an old cummins kenworth in aus and my 460fh here, the noise is similar with a knackered exhaust on the Volvo and the retarding effect is similarly useful.

Scalia ones are st

Eta - having googled it, it seems the veb works as a compression brake like a jake, only with an exhaust brake flap behind it, to keep it quiet. I guess my exhaust flap must have been knackered!

Mine definitely doesn't have an exhaust brake and the fitters tell me it uses some form of valve control for engine braking. It's less than useless but some of our Volvos are far better.

I've been driving trucks for over 45 years and I've never heard of it.
A 'Jake brake" is a complicated type of retarder. Much more involved than the exhaust brakes that we are used to and it provides more braking effort than anything I've used (FL12 for eg).

Very loud though.

Just to ad to that, Jacobs invented it, that's where the term jake brake comes from, Volvo VEB ( Volvo Engine Brake ) is their take on it, usually 3 position, each position will use 2 cylinders, so on 3 it will be 6 cylinders on 2 4 etc.

I've also heard them referred too as 'Retarder's' but not sure if that maybe refers to something else.
When I drove coaches we had both. The exhaust brake did the engine & the retarder was like an electric motor trying to turn the prop backwards.
