Iveco 75e17 starting problem

Hi all, I wonder if there is anyone on here who might be able to offer me some advice? I've got a 2003 Eurocargo tector that I use very occasionally-i last started it in December probably so even though the batteries are new ish and there is an isolator fitted they are nearly always flat.
Anyway that's not really the problem-i went to start it last week, as usual the batteries were flat but it would turn over well with a jump pack. It started as normal but then conked out after 10 or 15 seconds and then wouldn't restart.
If I pump the manual pump by the fuel filter under the arch it will start, but will only continue running if I keep pumping the pump which I can see becoming a bit inconvenient whilst trying to drive at the same time!
Any ideas? Is there a seperate lift pump in the tank that could have failed? Or relays etc?

No pump apart from the main one on the engine sounds like its sucking air , sometimes the diaphragm in the hand primer fails !! Also old diesel can get algie in it and go like stringy snot so maybe the filters are a bit blocked , I would change the filters and check the pipework out first..Anyway that's not really the problem-i went to start it last week, as usual the batteries were flat but it would turn over well with a jump pack. Hmm, no stringy snot diesel-i removed all the filters and they seem to have 'clean' fuel in them. I had a very good look at the fuel pipes and fittings, most of which aren't that easy to see, I would assume that if there was an air leak, itwould also leak fuel under pressure which there is no sign of.
I've discovered that there is a low pressure pump on the back of the injector pump, im beginning to think there's a problem there.

The fuel systems on them are shocking. Id drain the tank and change filters to start with as you really don't want to be putting bad fuel in it. See how you go from there.
As its not used much check all the seals, pipes etc as it could be sucking in air however that's a mere to find as it doesn't always leak fuel.
The low press pumps do fail fairly common.
