Ours used to flex with no weight in the back, just a couple of windscreens but they were the older vans (2003).

The 1.6 can be Euro 76, it's not the emissions that are the problem, it is (in my opinion) a design fault. The injectors sit in a tube that passes through the head between the cams. When the injector seals start leaking they allow atomized diesel at high temp to pass into the tube where it condenses into something like black cinder toffee. Once the tubes are blocked with this crap it pushes it's way past the bottom of the tubes that aren't very well sealed to the bottom of the head. This crap then starts forming inside the block leading to oil starvation for the turbo. They use a gauze filter in the oil feed line to thew turbo which blocks really easily.

The 2.0 seems to be a great engine though.

The transporter is a great van but I'll disagree with the other comments and say its plenty of hype around them too and they're fashionable and you pay the price for that. Used prices are crazy.

You see so many because contract hire companies love them they make loads of money on them. They keep them for 3 years under vw warranty then sell them for not much less than they paid for them. I would imagine large hire companies paying about £13k + VAT, then selling them for £10k + VAT 3 years later. Not to mention making £10k on the contract hire. Nice work if you can get it.

And yes I have owned ( well company owned i was a courier) one and and a sprinter, 2 LT's, vivaro, scudo, iveco, transit, doblo and belingo.
