Just wondering how the transport industy would be affected could we chuck out the tacho and the limiter and go back to log books ETC?? just curious as the EU have really gone to town on transport directives and legislation over the years...

Go through most of the continental EU countries, and you'll see plenty of wagons from non-EU countries. To work in the EU, though, they conform to EU regs. They don't tend to come here, because it's not worth the drivers getting UK visas - they'll either just get a Schengen visa or be visa-free in Schengen countries.

i was thinking that maybe containers and boat bulk traffic (chemical, powder, grain, fertiliser etc) would increase, as we buy more from further afield.

The biggest problem would be customs clearance.
At the moment it's straight across EU borders if its British goods out or EU goods coming in .
Add a couple of hours getting the paperwork sorted to go abroad and staying in an appropriate area to get clearance .
Trying to get into places like Turkey by road can take upto 36hrs at the boarder .
I cannot see the regs on hrs and speed changing too much if we came out .
If we stay in be ready for anything over 2 tonnes being regulated in the future if used as a commercial vehicle.

Having never done it, what's it like getting into Norway/Switzerland at the moment? I'm assuming nothing like turkey, but still delays?

Never done either but other guys at work say if the paperwork all matches its just a hour or two .Swiss as you would expect are very pedantic especially if it's ADR (Hazardous ).
If the paperwork isn't right then how long is a piece of string! .

I used to be able to get in and out of Norway and Switzerland around about the 30 minute mark. Swiss could sometimes take longer if it was really busy, but Norway always seemed a breeze.
Turkey on average was approx 4-8 hours, (but we did have fixers as we were normally in convoy groups.) One day though, getting out of Turkey took about 21 hours as the "artist" had upset the government.
Russia always 12 minimum, with help and envelopes.
