Irrespective of the one you pick, you are likely to fill it Up and be overweight.

Don’t get caught if you are!

So the £400 the OP is suggesting for Mon-Fri, sounds reasonable?

It's the other way round: Fri-Mon. smile

Also OP, if you are using the tail lift lots it will drain the battery. I suggest you run the van engine occasionally to charge the battery while using it. Someone I know very nearly flattened the battery on the van doing this!

Because the vehicle and tail lift itself weighs quite a bit, the maximun payload on a 3.5 tonne tail lift Luton is usually pretty rubbish. Its down as low as about 900kg which is about the same as for a Vauxhall Combo!

Standard 3.5 tonne vans can carry a little more weight up to about 1.3 tonnes.

If what you're carrying is mostly bulky furniture (Sofas, beds etc) the Luton will be better, but they are very easy to put too much weight in the back if a lot of what you're moving is knocked down flat-packed furniture, boxes of books etc.

Spend the extra on the Luton. As others have said, the tail lift will be worth its weight in gold compared to fking about in a transit type affair.

The extra cost can be mitigated by the fact that you carry far, far more and you can legitimately eat a Yorkie bar whilst driving with the real truckers.

Mine doesn't charge for the weekend if you tell them you don't "want it" for the weekend. i.e. pick it up on a Friday morning , and drop it back on Sun PM, hire it for Friday. They have a key drop box but don't monitor it, and make no secret of it.

A Luton can can be driven on a standard issue licence.
It is worth checking though before rocking up. It's just possible a Luton with a tail-lift is more than 3.5t

(Although if OP passed test before 01/01/97 that's not a problem either)

Just another thought...your friend should check their household insurance covers the items in transit.

Having been involved in several house moves over recent years I'd say get somebody else to do it! It's knackering work, I got tired just watching the removal men hehe

Luton every time.

One thing which might be important. Where you are moving from and too.. is it street parking or is there a drive? If street parking you might want to consider parking one of your car’s irresponsibly (taking up two spaces) at least the day before. It’s what I did to ensure I was directly outside the properties with room for a van.

Hired one from a local place a couple of years back. £100 a day. Tail lift a big bonus. Totally knackering though moving a whole household and garage and shed contents.

If you hire the Luton, then I'd suggest checking the overall height. Then checking it again.

You might want to also check the insurance excess conditions (even if you buy some optional cover) to see what happens if you inadvertently cause damage to the top of the vehicle by, say, hitting a low-hanging tree branch. I've heard of some companies having specific clauses relating to this.

Rental company manager here!

Use the Luton (tail lift will save you time and pain) and the square body and height will allow you to make a lot more use of the space. £400 ain’t that cheap though, is that just for one day?
Friday to Monday: need time to load, travel, unload and travel.
Seems fair, not the cheapest but not hideously expensive either.

Not necessarily. ‘Luton’ is a cargo area style, not a weight definition.

I rented a 7.5 to move my gf up to Scotland.

I didn’t realise she had so much stuff as it practically filled the van.

The tail lift was a godsend till…I went to start the engine and the battery was flat.

A point to note.

Done this with both vans, get a Luton if you can. £400 sounds mega expensive shop around.

I realise that Traffic Cops are a vanishing species. All the same, be aware that speed limits for vans on "national speed limit" single carriageways and dual carriageways are lower than for cars. 99% of van drivers ignore them, but best to be aware and not go barrelling towards a cop holding a speed gun without knowing what limit applies to your van.
