The manned ones generally let us through as a leisure vehicle (class 2?) so it was relatively cheap.

The unmanned toll booths are equipped with both weight sensors and laser height sensors so if you break the beam, you are a commercial vehicle (class 4?) - which at least tripled the price.

I have heard anecdotal stories of people removing roof boxes etc to get back under the 3m restriction.

This is one of the main reasons that we now just pay the extra and go to Bilbao/Santander on the ferry: Spanish autoroutes are dirt cheap and we save at least 2 days in each direction on the holiday as we have 2 children who won't really do more than 3 hours transit at a go.
