Can get vwt5 in 4x4 not sure ref the t4 I'd assume so. Can get sprinters in 4x4 are over 2m tho.

You can make a bed in the rear of most 4x4 like discos etc, I've done that before. I've got a shogun 3.2 the seats fold flat 'ish' & makes a double bed, for work I'm often in in a couple of nights a WK off on Europe runs, I just fold the pas side flat, leaves the 60% side of boot for tools etc. I've had simple curtains made, takes 2 mins to set up & its fine. With the right bedding its fine to really cold temps, was minus 5 before Xmas in Germany. You can always get a night heater fitted for a grand or so.
Another good sounding idea, thanks. This is sort of what I was thinking about. Getting a heater and battery capacity up or some form of generator for camera gear and laptop etc. and a decent Arctic type sleeping bag and so on, for when it is really cold.

I saw one of these a few months back, and thought "that would be nice for driving in a field".

Mitsubishi Delica. Seems they aren't exactly terrible at offroading either.

Subaru Forester for ground clearance and can sleep in with rear seats down. Fit a roof-rack

Subaru Legacy Estate for sleeping in but not quite so great ground clearance.

I had a 110 hard top I kitted out for weekend, overnight, fishing trips.
For the majority of time it was used driving, general car use.
It was a very cold, uncomfortable, frugal, agricultural, generally slow, thirsty, bone shaking, noisy state of affairs...
I sold it, and bought a Toyota Land Cruiser, a much nicer, faster, quieter, economical, warmer, smoother, just as capable, more reliable, happy, happy, place to be.
Unless your going to be photographing pay and play, bomb craters,110 even then is not the answer.

I'd go for a landcruiser or patrol over a defender. They will be more comfortable for long haunts through Europe. Most will have ac too unlike the defenders.

If you want to go seriously hardcore get an older one with a solid front axel and not IFS.

To go a little left field, try a RB44.

It really is a cut price Unimog.

Subaru Outback... 4x4, reliable, plenty of space and the fronts seats recline into a flat horizontal position to sleep in!

The front seats won't fold back flat (rear seats get in the way), however you might mean folding the rear seats forward, that gives a >6ft flat loading space in the rear.

convert an ex supermarket (ex ocado etc) refrigerated delivery van into a decent camper. find one on the mercedes sprinter chassis.
the refrigeration unit can be stripped out and sold to recoup some cost (some models of carrier ones fetch ~£500).
very thick foam insulation, already pre pannelled and vapour sealed (no more condensation) and due to being body on frame, you can mount stuff under the living space (water tanks, batteries, inverters etc and an extra tank for red diesel to fuel eberspacher hot water/cabin heater units and a small diesel generator), freeing up internal space and giving you total autonomy in even the very worst weather.

a bit leftfield, but if you can forgo some offroad ability you can seriously up your comfort level
(a proper mattress, a proper cooked meal, no faffing with camping stoves, a lavatory AND a nice hot shower!!)
provided you can do some camper converting DIY. also with a bit of intelligent design you could easily add a ramp to the back to haul a motorcycle inside the camper when travelling.

Now that is a good idea! I would never have thought of that, but the pre-installed sealing etc. sounds like a real advantage.
Need to look into availability etc.

Cheers

Could you imagine trying to squeeze over Ashness Bridge etc in an ex supermarket type van though?

And you'd have to do something to get light in, you don't want to live in a spacious coffin.

Possibly the most spacious option but if it were me I'd sacrifice some creature comforts for the decreased stress of getting a smaller vehicle into remote locations. But I'm biased - most of my stuff is landscape photography, and the more remote the better.

A go anywhere machine, can travel to remote locations in and sleep in for a few days at a time...

I like the look of Defenders but chose the Jeep Wrangler for driving luxuries.

PS are you particularly small? The Wrangler isn't a big car.
