Caravans: What's the Point?
Discussion
After sitting behind long lines of caravans on the A69 heading to the lakes today, I wondered if anybody on here can explain their appeal? Surely if you have enough money to buy, store and maintain a caravan to use a few times a year, you can pay for a few weekends in one of those big static luxury ones, or even buy a camper van which has more than one use.
I'm not even flaming caravans, I just genuinely don't understand what their point is.

While the caravan vs hotel debate is another matter, for caravan vs campervan, I think the caravan is the better option. Cheaper to buy, lower insurance/maintenance costs (on something you don't use regularly, too), and you don't have to (literally) decamp every time you want to go for a day out from whare you're pitched.
That last one obviously doesn't apply if you have a bike or small car that your camper carries/tows for such duty, but that's making the first two points even worse.

I woke up a few days ago and Mrs Pints announced from the bathroom, "I think we should buy a caravan."
It was the shortest argument we've had. I simply refuse to entertain the idea.
By the time I've bought, stored and insured it - not to mention the fitting cost of a tow-bar and extra fuel used to drag it behind my car doing 50 mph - I could have put the family up in a decent sea-side chalet several times a year.

For us the main reason we got a caravan is because of the dogs. It makes it easier for us to go away without having to find dog friendly accommodation. The good ones are usually booked up way in advance and many others charge a small fortune to have the dogs. We just found it easier and cheaper. The real bonus for us is finding a site with a pub a very short walk away and nice walks on our doorstep so we don't need to use the car. If it wasn't for the dogs, I very much doubt I would have a caravan.

Just go camping or glamping if you're that way inclined. If you want to be one with nature and smash your misses in a sweaty tent with a BBQ on the go outside, with some fruit cider on ice, camping is far superior.
I'm looking forward to summer

This...also done a few trips to Silverstone for the Grand PrixIf you have to ask the question then you would probably never understand.
As an avid hater of caravans, I reluctantly found myself forced to accept one on my life (don't ask but it involved kinky sex so I went for it).
Anyway, I now love caravans, they are cosy, comfortable and like pulling a perfectly set up mini version of your own home.
Perfect if you don't mind stting in a chemical loo next to the kitchen but even that's not as bad as it sounds.
Given a choice of staying in a static that all and sundry have stayed in or my little haven on wheels, the static doesn't get a look it.
As for hotels, if I wanted to stay in a prison, I'd commit a worthwhile crime.

Mr Prime Minister & all your fellow pen-pushers you please WAKE UP to a tax opportunity that has been overlooked since the age of motoring began.
I'll explain.....
Mobile toilets, sorry caravans, take up as much room on the road as a car, a car/caravan composite takes up 2 parking spaces & their pedestrian pace as the ignorant driver & passenger gawp at the scenery whilst studiously ignoring the queue behind contribute to the global pollution crisis.
THEREFORE PLEASE INTRODUCE A MINIMU AN ANNUAL (ANAL) TAX OF £1000 PER CARAVAN. More for the really selfish oversized ones.
I would vote for any MP irrespective of party who had the guts to even suggest this.
