Hi. Can anyone on here recommend an excellent great value campsite in the above two places?
I'm coming back to the UK for the annual Summer holiday.
One week staying up in Newcastle ( seeing the family)+ one week camping.
Taking a 3 man tent + extra small single tent. ( 1 adult+ 2 teenagers). Looking to camp end July.
3 nights near Nottingham and 3/4 nights down south.

This is the first time camping with my kids ( 13/18), as we normally stay in hotels/b'n b's in the UK.

Can't help with the New Forest but for Sherwood I recommend this:

It's a few year since we stop there but I doubt it's changed much.

It depends what you're after from a site.

Some offer lots of entertainment for kids, such as play areas and pools. Others just bask in the natural beauty of the New Forest and you walk / cycle around the place.

I'm no fan of the former, so can't offer any personal recommendations, but gather that Sandy Balls may be a possible option for you.

With regards the latter, we love the Black Knowl Caravan Club site near Brockenhurst.

I'm looking for a quiet, friendly, well run camp site as a base to explore the surrounding area. I used to live near Beaulieu so know the area well, but the only time i camped in the forest was a scout ( at Denny Wood with military style tents and cold buckets of water as a shower!).

The kids want to go to Portsmouth, Southampton, Winchester etc.
How much is it to hire mountain bikes in The New Forest?

We've only camped the once in the New Forest and stayed here: http://www.redshoot-campingpark.com/

Seem to remember it being rather nice along with the added bonus of there being a pub next door with its own micro brewery and decent food.

I would most certainly second the Redshoot. Nice campsite adjacent to a decent pub for beer, meals and often live bands.
The pub even has it's own brewery!
Plus there are two great pubs within walking distance in either direction from the campsite (Alice Lisle and High Corner Inn).
All dog friendly too.
- You can tell what's important to me!

Most official Forestry Commission sites tend to be very light on facilities. Other commercial ones can get pricy, but do offer a higher standard of facilities (Sandy Balls was mentioned).

A quick note, the Caravan Club site in Clumber park don't do tents, caravans / campers / trailer tents only (I was asking there a couple of weeks ago).
The New Forest, I've stayed in a couple of the Forestry Commission sites, Roundhill and Hollands Wood, both these are close to Brockenhurst (Hollands Wood is closer) where there is a very good cycle hire place (they also hire Renault Twizys for a laugh). Both these sites are good bases for exploring the area.

I have done the last two October half-terms at Sandyballs and whilst it serves a purpose for those with young kids (as I have) I am not sure I will be returning again anytime soon. As you might imagine it gets incredibly busy and the pool for example operates a restricted entry policy.

I was born just outside Portsmouth lived down there for 20 years - the New Forest was one of my favourite places and as a teenager me and a mate spent two weeks camping and cycling round there. I forget the sites I use back then but when researching the October breaks I did come across a number of sites that I wouldn't have minded but which lacked some of the things the wife and kids wanted - eg electric hook up.

This place seemed well liked (although only open weekends) http://tomsfield.com/ and some of these seemed quite nice http://www.campingintheforest.co.uk/england/new-fo... Can't particulalry help with Mountain bike hire although we did go here http://www.moors-valley.co.uk/ where there are some nice bike tracks through the woods and the bike hire was reasonable. A lot of the bike shops in the area appeared to do hire as well around the £20 mark for the day - although again, in school holidays you would probably need to book in advance
