We are contemplating a porch awning, but when on a site earlier this year the caravan next to us had one but it seemed not to have any seal between the riser on the awning and the side of the caravan, so was blowing all over the place.

Do some fit better to the side of the van than others? In particular are the air ones better?

I'm guessing it was poorly erected.

Ours has thick padded risers that need pegging around 2-3 inches under the van to get a decent seal, it also has the facility to put poles in the sides (it's an air awning) but we've never needed to use them.

Our Kampa one on the caravan had a well padded leg that mounted against the caravn and was pegged down, worked well. But on our motorhome, the Thule side panels have no facility for this and just flap in the wind.

IMHO Thule's nowhere near as good as the Kampa system though when I questioned Thule at the show about this yesterday, their answer was you should retract the awning in anything over a gentle breeze.

Kampa side pads are great when well pitched - go and have a look at a few more when your on site and speak to the owners.

Friendly bunch us Vanners.... :-)

Never quite see the point of these on site. If you're spending time with pegs, poles etc you may as well have a full size one you can make use of.

My porch awning goes up in 20 mins - my full size awning takes an hour.

Its also quicker to dry if a wet weekender.

So our "house" rule is 2 nights or less the porch is used and 3 nights or more then the full size goes up.

If its going to be wet then the porch is a cert as we keep the boots/wet coats etc in that and it also keeps the mud out.

Love my porch, love my full size.

Horse for courses and all that.

yes That`s pretty much how we operate as well. I`m not faffing around with the full size one for a weekend...

Well a Kampa Rally 200 is being picked up tomorrow. Theory being we are away for 4 nights, in late October when its dark early, might be cold etc. With 3 of us (plus dog) in a 6 berth caravan and we have plenty of space inside so dont need the space of the large awning on this trip. However an area to keep shoes etc would be useful which doesnt take an hour to out up and down and take an age to dry.

We'll see how it goes!

No way! 20 minutes up, job done.

Sod putting the big one up for 2 or 3 nights. Especially if you get to site at 3pm and only have an hour until it's dark...

Awesome.

Its just a great place to get out of the rain and wind before getting into the warm of the van. And specially when travelling with a dog/kids - you can wipe them down before hand and leave the wet coats and muddy boots out there.

Good investment for all year vanning.

Well, I have my full size set up pretty quickly these days, between 30-40 minutes? The biggest issue is the timing of taking it down I guess, I used to do it the night before leaving site and get an early getaway, but mostly do it in the morning now depending on the weather.
