Gues the subject heading says it all. But why have people decided they should have fairy lights outside their caravan/tent?

I have always thought it was an aid to finding your caravan/tent when heading back from the pub pissed. But then everybody is at it so the site looks like a multi coloured fairground.

It's a low voltage diffuse light source, so it's very good at providing enough illumination to avoid tripping over ropes, stepping on things, etc.

Also it looks pretty.

The wife strings them up on the awning, happy wife = happy life and all that...

To be honest they do aid locating the van at night.

I use them at Le Mans.

Enough light to navigate a midnight piss.
Enough light that thieves would be visible.
Not enough light to annoy anyone.
Perfect.

Think it's spread from the music festivals, which are more popular than ever these days.

Bagged a ship load at the local discount store dirt cheap and thought it would be nice.

I run them up the lines to prevent falling over them at night and does provide a nice light.

Agree on the festival front, use them at Latitude to navigate home pissed in the middle of a canvas filling field.

Tie them to a fishing rod wedged in the jockey wheel hole... Kids see where we are after dark.

I'm surprised it's not offensive to use the term "fairy lights" these days....

We use them on our tent at music festivals:

a) cos the wife likes 'em
b) so we can locate the tent in a sea of others when returning at night
c) to give some visibility when putting our (hopefully) sleeping baby to bed without needing a headtorch
d) to stop other pissed people tripping over our guy ropes, as I run them down the main front ones.

All seems to work well.
