Plenty by the looks. On my way xmas shopping to Exeter going south on M5 this afternoon saw plenty of Motorhomes out and about. Most I would guess coming back from Cornwall. On the whole a hardy bunch because it ain,t that warm at the moment with the northerly wind. Me and the misses are using ours in a few weeks time for a trip up the line for a mates b,day party and again mid December to stay in over night for a works Christmas doo, so both of us can drink. Not sure what the 5 star hotel are going to make of us rocking up and setting up for the night in there overflow car park. May have to park up a bit away and catch a taxi to the gig. Also I noted that the overwhelming majority of vans I saw this afternoon were Hymers, closely followed by Autotrail. Any reason for that ?

This thread will be no good without pictures..........

Hymers are known for being very well insulated and winterised to a high standard so they lend themselves very well to the colder seasons.

I take my CI out a bit over winter too, the work xmas party and events being a couple of things coming up.

2 years ago we went to snowy Derbyshire for new year, might do the same this year.

Winter tyres, electric hookup, nice pub at the end of the road, heated floor in the washrooms. Teversal C&CC

As above - Hymers are wonderfully toasty in the winter and really suited to winter touring. I am almost happier motorhoming in the winter than in the high season as 1) it's less busy and 2) it's nice and cosy in the van and I like hunkering down.

That said, with work busy, weekends booked up with family & friends and the arrival of a new dog to the family, we haven't got anything booked and I'm missing using Harry.

Likewise, we're looking to go somewhere in the gap between Christmas and New Year, or early December. We don't have a Hymer, but we've never been to bothered by the outside temperature in our German van. Get the heater on with a bit of gas boost and it's toasty!

we were going on an over nighter in a couple of days time. What is worrying me is the on board water tanks and pipes freezing up over night. It,s still frozen here and it,s 1.15 pm . Also do people leave the gas heater on when they are out and about & not in the van to deal with any issues

When we had ours we went to the Midlands over christmas & it reached -9, we nearly froze even with the heating in the van. The next night was forecast to be even colder so we bailed & went home early!

Van was still under warranty so we had the heating checked, no faults found. Just couldn't cope when it got that cold, was tempted to turn the gas oven on too but didn't want to risk it.

Our boiler / heating can work off gas or electric (on hook up) or both at the same time. So maximum heat to start with both power sources, then turn it down to electric only to maintain. Cold water tank is under seats so doesn't freeze easily and keep waste open into a bucket and that shouldn't be a problem either.

What van have you got? We've been down to minus-9degs C in the Hymer and now Problem. It did mean the heating was on fairly constantly as with blown air heating, you start feeling cooler once it kicks off but we had it set to 22degs and it was nice and warm and toasty.

Spent a week in our van about 5 years at Christmas. It was one of the shockingly cold winters when we had stloads of snow. The heating and insulation mean it doesn't really matter how cold it is out there.

We have an Autotrail. Its a long one (8.7m) and the Truma heating simply isnt man enough to warm the front lounge area so I bought an oil filled radiator with a timer which comes on an hour before we get up.

Toasty smile

Obviously this isnt much use if you are not on an EHU

Just on way back to the UK from Croatia, Zagreb (cold), Venice (minus 5 degrees), Prague, Dresden, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, plus other remote stop-overs here and there.. We will have racked up around 4000 miles by the time we get back.
