Why has no government woken up to the realisation that caravans should attract road tax as do vehicles, including of course motor caravans. Everything else connected to motoring is taxed to the hilt yet the dumb lot in successive parliaments seem blind to this perfect income source. Maybe too many MP's own shares in caravan manufacturers or God forbid own the damn things.
I have asked my local MP to raise the matter with the Minister of Transport & written to the papers & local TV companies to get the matter discussed.
After caravans are taxed then ones sights should be set on cyclists.

Because tax is calculated on emmisons.

Have a guess how much caravans and cyclists produce.

Not 100% true from April 2017 as from then (excluding the 1st year) whether you splashed £40K or more out for the car?

That would depend on how much gas the caravan was consuming, and they do contribute to an increase in car emmissions while they are being towed. Cyclists produce hot air.

A road worthyness check wouldn't be a bad idea for trailers and caravans though...

Why do so many people on here think adding tax (or more tax) to everything is a good thing?

It's not like it will achieve much except give the government more money to waste whilst making everyone poorer.

Pretty sure a car towing a caravan will use more fuel than one that isn't...

Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

You're right.

So when they pay for more fuel they will be paying more duty and tax.

As I do when I fill up the tank on my 5 litre V8. I also get to pay £515 a year VED which is more than most other cars, regardless of how much pollution I'm causing.

If caravans drove around on their own, I might agree, but they don't. When separated from a car, they aren't on the highway (something like 99.97% of a caravans entire life is off the highway), and when attached to a car they are effectively one complete (and taxed) vehicle anyway, not two separate ones.

Perhaps the OP should be grateful that there isn't a tax for people with stupid ideas, ooooh there's a thought!

Looks like the OP has been in "rant" mode for a while.

Caravans, David Lloyd health clubs, the BMW brand, and police speed traps have all been in his sights recently.

Good job you're paying that extra tax.

Should caravans be taxed or should all cars be taxed though? scratchchin
