Sorry, mate, you are incorrect there. To my certain knowledge, the Swedish government tax not only caravans, but also trailers, etc. They even have a requirement that trailed vehicles have to have their equivalent of an MoT.

Taxes are weight based, starting at around £35 and rising to £2200+....

So at least one government has woken up to that.

On the other side of the argument, if caravans/trailers where registered/taxxed then they would also he legal to be stored on the public highway, not attached to a vehicle. They could also be administered their own number plate like they are elsewhere making them easier to indentify if stolen.

That wouldn't be good, every idiot in the country would park their caravan on the road rather than their drive

That might be true. But like it or not that is the other side of the tax/insurance debate for trailers.

Presumably they tax all cars as well, not like us who allow big numbers to not pay a vehicle tax..?

Pretty sure a car towing a caravan will use more fuel than one that isn't...
Not as much as you think , because traveling at a constant 50 in my tow car it's not too much different from a constant 70,
Not towing .

Not to mention the congestion caravans cause on the road.
Taxing them will help pay for the road alterations required.
Anything which clogs the roads up should be taxed.

As an aside I would wholeheartedly support a mandatory periodic roadworthiness inspection for caravans and trailers- they're constantly jack-knifing or falling over because the ancient wheel bearings or tyres have given up, or the rig was simply not properly balanced.

So what are you going to do about the millions of cars which clog the roads daily and pay no or next-to-no car tax?

I'm not.
The Government have already introduced minimum road tax from April next year for all car except EVs.

Congestion caused by 50 limit most modern rigs quite safe at 60.

From 2017? I think that'll mean there are still millions of pre 2017 cars clogging up the roads which pay no vehicle tax.

I would disagree. I do a lot of towing with work and the majority of congestion I would say is caravans doing a fair whack less than 50, although ultimately cars with no trailers doing 25-30 is a far greater issue.

A caravan tax would be great for me NOT. My van is on a seasonal pitch and then kept in storage over the winter, so I would need to tax my van for two 30 minute journeys in a year.

Same as my mate does about 25k a year in his car and I do about 3k a year and I pay more car tax.
