I've downloaded Dracula for my ipad, just started reading it. Loving it so far

I started On The Origin Of Species using the kindle reader on my phone, but it's quite heavy going.

The Sherlock Holmes books are pretty good for nowt - the short story ones are about the perfect length for a commute.

Another vote for Dracula. Slightly odd writing style (all extracts from diaries) but well worth reading.

The Mrs bought me a kindle for my birthday and being a tightwad I've been hunting though the free books and found some great stuff. Currently reading Dracula, and have Frankenstein, The 39 Steps, and The Adventures of Sherlock Homes to get on to next, plus biographies of Charles Darwin and Captain Cook.

So what other free treats have people discovered?

Not free, exactly, but worth keeping an eye on the Kindle Daily Deals, two or three books each day for about a pound each.

There's the occasional gem - for instance on the day that would have been Douglas Adams' 60th Birthday, they had the full Hitchhiker's "trilogy" (all five books) for 99p.

Oh, and also to say...

It's worth noting that some publishers are now getting sensible over the selling price of new ebooks, and acknowledging the fact that they don't have all the manufacturing and distribution costs of a paper book and so can be cheaper - especially soon after publication when they want to hit bestseller lists.

For instance, Peter May's latest (Runaway) is £9.49 in hardback but only £2.85 for Kindle. His previous (Entry Island) is £3.85 in paperback and £1.68 for Kindle.

At those sorts of prices I don't begrudge paying for them!

The first half was good. The second half is a bit slow. I've got about 20% left and it is becoming a struggle.
