I like them but have gone off Lee Child since he chose Tom Cruise to play Reacher in the upcoming films.
He did NOT CHOOSE Tom Cruise. He just said he didn't mind.He doesn't mind slim diminuitive Tom Cruise playing 6'8" brick outhouse Reacher because a famous actor means even more financial success.
Can't knock him for it really.

Tom Cruise? the last person I would have guessed. this stinks of sell out with Cruise looking at the possibility of a series of films. The trailer looks ropey too. In the current book Reacher admits to not being a good driver. in the trailer hes hammering about like a getaway driver.

I quite enjoy the Reacher books, but they are best reserved for those times when you don't want to put any effort into reading a book (i.e. brain out) and I do find the writing style slightly annoying in parts where the authors uses dozens of very short sentences to describe something. The McNab books are much better IMO, but there are several authors mentioned on this thread that I will need to check out, so thanks to all who made suggestions.

Does it really matter? The fact is you couldnt pick an actor further removed from the character.
I fully understand why he doesn't mind Tom Cruise playing the rols but it just comes across as a bit of a sell out.
Liam Neeson would have been a far better choice and would still be a big box office draw.

I think he's a completely ridiculous choice, but then nobody could ever say Hollywood and the rest of the fim industry is anything but ridiculous in most of what it does. I don't blame Lee Child for a second, though. Nor do I think blaming him, or anyone else, will change anything. I won't be going to see the film as I don't support Scientology - directly or indirectly. It won't impinge on my life at all.
It wouldn't be so bad if Child didn't rub our noses in it constantly.
This is about page 2 in the new book;
"Reacher was a big man, six feet five inches tall, heavily built and that night as always he looked a little ragged and unkempt"
Then, at the back of the book, it has Reachers 'CV' including his height, weight, chest size, etc.
The new book sucks as well. I have no idea what the bad guys motivation was.

He was a bad guy? I haven't read it yet, so just being facetious.This is about page 2 in the new book;

Child's writing style, if quoted correctly above, is abysmal!This is about page 2 in the new book;

Really good honest books sure you can buy better written or more devious thrillers but you know what your getting with this one.
I read two then bought the series on the bay all hard backs read once for £25 considering its 16 books that's going to last me. Mind I don't read them back to back so I've years of books awaiting

Have read five or six now, mostly on Aeroplanes when I can't manage my copy of War & Peace or Crime & Punishment
I quite like the observational stuff in them and the description of down at heel small town America. Reads more like a modern version of Kung Fu (hero arrives in town, fixes stuff by beating people up or killing them, then moves on)
But all in all I enjoy them, I don't worry about the snob value of reading something, its just a question of entertainment.
I think you've hit it on the head there. The observational stuff of that scrag end of American society is so sympathetically but brutally honestly described.I quite like the observational stuff in them and the description of down at heel small town America. I do wonder if , as a Brit, Lee Child paints a more accurate reflection of small town America. He's certainly very good at this sort of detail. I think that he's very good at describing American culture from the outside, whilst making it feel it's from the inside. Wonderful stuff, love the Jack Reacher character , but, Tom fking Cruise? Having a laff are'nt you?
Harmless airplane reading,but pretty formulaic. He typically seems to kill about a dozen people a book,forms a meaningful relationship with an attractive woman,solves the problems in the town he is in, and leaves her and walks away owning nothing but the clothes he is wearing,some small change and his toothbrush. Oddly,he never seems to have toothpaste or a razor.I would guess he has killed 250 people and maimed a thousand at least.
I suspect he uses a DE razor.
I'm reading Reacher at the moment and am quite enjoying it - not a hard read and pure nonsense. Perfect.
1. Reacher drifts into town
2. Meets a slim woman with a tanned and firm physique just visible under her white cotton shirt.
3. She needs help
4. He kills the baddies
5. Reacher drifts out of town.
I hope I haven't spoiled it for anyone.
