So (obviously) you're of above average intellect, eh?

The irony is strong here!
A first degree and MSc plus professional qualification I'd say as average is 5 A-C GCSEs only yes.

Banks is very good, as always the books are better than the TV series. Apart from anything else, I don't picture Banks as anything like the guy that plays him on TV.

If you like those, there's also the Bob Skinner series from Quintin Jardine, and I also quite liked the Charlie Priest books by Stuart Pawson. And Graham Hurley's Joe Faraday series. With apologies if some or all of those have already been mentioned.

I read a couple of John Connolly books, and although they were generally good, I can't be doing with spirits and ghosts and so on.
Thanks for the Bob Skinner recommendation. Am on book 7 and enjoying them.
Just finishing book 25 of the Skinner series.... What next?? 😊

I've recently read some by Stephen Booth, they're set in Derbyshire, a bit more country-fied but quite enjoyable. Have you read the Graham Hurley series with Joe Faraday, or the Paul Finch books with DS Heckenburg? The latter are a bit more gritty as I recall. I've also read two of the three by James Oswald, they were good except for one little twist in one of them that I didn't like.

I haven't.... I am just reading an in-between book (!) but will come back and take a look. Skinner was very good - so thanks for recommending. smile

No problem, glad you enjoyed them. I also enjoyed most of the Oz Blackstone novels by the same guy, though they're quite different to Skinner.

Funnily enough.... My Kindle recommended Oz and I'm on the first one now.

Presumably none of the qualifications are in English though, judging from that last, unpunctuated sentence... wink

I read Personal recently and it was a little ho-hum once he got to England (Surely, too, he could have found a more interesting place to set it than a suburb in Essex - Was he under curfew or something at the time????).

I'm reading "Worth Dying For" at the moment, which is much better. Reacher is better on home turf (although the point, in the books, is that it's not true home for him...) and, to be honest, this one reads more like a Spaghetti Western than most others.

I've got a Ben Hope to read on my Kindle app, so I'm looking forward to that. If I'm honest, I much prefer them.

Reachers are pulp fiction really, nothing wrong with that. He's not a character that ever seems to develop, either. He just rolls into town, gets in a couple of fights, saves someone from the baddies, usually kills the baddies and leaves town. (Perhaps I should hide that behind a spoiler as it's just ruined every one I've read so far! biggrin)

Yes, good reads.

Vince Flynn died in 2013 , but I think someone is going to carry on with the Mitch Rapp series.

A bit cartoonish though.

Reacher (and Ben Hope) are both more credible characters.

Rapp's a bit Captain America for me.

Lucas Davenport, Virgil Flowers and Kidd all by John Sandford.

Liked the few I got from the local library that I have now bought the lot of the Davenports, four of the six Flowers and one of the Kidd

With further topping up in the future as they become available on the 'bay

In a similar vein to the Reacher books there are the John Milton books by Mark Dawson which I think are Kindle only. Same type of thing and quite enjoyable reads.

Thanks for posting that, been after some new reading material. The whole John Milton series also is available as two boxsets which I always prefer to buying individually if possible.

I've heard of those, I think they keep popping up on my Facebook for some reason. It's a pity they're Kindle-only, as I can't really get used to reading a novel while sitting at a screen. His web site (markjdawson.com) has an offer for some free sample editions though, so will have a look.
