Jack Reacher - any good?

Mixed reviews then, for Night School?
I'm currently re-reading Never Go Back. Started it with the intention of finishing it before going to see the movie. Got half way through, saw the movie, and was shocked at how many characters from the book never made the cut for the film. After seeing poor reviews for the film I was dreading it, but as a movie it's OK. Just not as a film of a book. More "inspired by the characters created by Lee Child".
I've got Night School ready to go as soon as I put the other one down now. I'm looking forward to it, but some of the more recent books have been a little disappointing. I get the feeling that Mr Child has gone off the boil a bit, and possibly fallen out of love with his creation. I shall reserve judgement until I've read it, and approach it with an open mind...

I was very disappointed with Night School and actually gave up around chapter 9. It felt like a total departure from the tried and tested formula of Reacher rolling into a new town and getting himself emroiled in whatever shenanigans are afoot.I'm currently re-reading Never Go Back. I didn't like the trip back in time to a younger, military Reacher and there were too many important characters for my liking, to the point where, at times, Reacher didn't really feel like he was the main protagonist. I have heard that it picks up later in the book but, I just wasn't entertained enough to persevere.
Maybe he is trying to take Reacher in a new direction, maybe you're right and has fallen out of love/lost interest in his creation. Whatever the reason, it didn't work for me....it almost felt like it had been written by someone else.

Thanks for the John Milton suggestions - but I've already read the series... just went to look on Amazon and I did them earlier this year.

I'm currently reading the Paul Richter books by James Barrington. Military / espionage type thrillers but the main character is very good. You should like these if you like Reacher type books / characters.
