Nothing at all being implied there; I will certainly return to our ECS agent. Just attempting to convey the difference in 'feeling' from William Gibson's "Haptic Recon" vets...

Seems Stephen Baxter and Alistair Reynolds have a new one out. Thats this months Audible voucher sorted.

The Medusa Chronicles.

http://www.stephen-baxter.com/articles.html#medusa

Edit. Hells bells. From the link above (referring to the Arthur C Clarke connection and original story)
"perhaps most notably as a terrifically illustrated serial in the short-lived magazine Speed & Power (IPC, issues 5–13, 1974)"

Think I have that upstairs.

Picked up the first of "The Lost Fleet" series on a kindle deal a while back after they'd been mentioned on here. Just finished the first series (6 books) and started on the next series. They're a bit predictable at times and some of the science doesn't make sense but they're not a bad read.

After the revelation space universe stuff is the rest of Reynolds any good? Seems to get mixed reviews.

I'm quite a fan of the first series. Second one is a bit meh in comparison.

Got side tracked off Medusa and onto Alistairs Reynolds "Blue Remembered Earth". Jebus, it is boring as hell until half way through, starting to pick up. But then the boring bit starts to fit in.

Well, finished this one. Slow as hell to start but kicks off half way through. Not a bad plot and the next one, on a steel breeze should be on list next voucher from audible.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from there, second series is ok but nowhere near as good as the first.

I gather the other series is more about the civil wars in Syndic planets, have you read any of those?

I've had the first (and now the last) in the series sat in my 'to read' folder for some time. I'll probably wait until the other two turn up before getting started on them.

Well, The Medusa Chronicles, a bit odd at the start but the premise I found was good one. As it was an audio book the narrator imparted at tone of "jolly good show old boy" sort tone for the protagonists journey through time.

I would rate it a good read for a beach day with not much to do but found it wanting at some pf the plot turns and a longer book perhaps to expand on a few thing.

I followed it through to the end of the second series but not sure I can carry on with the rest. Not sure I could have stuck it with a paper copy, the audio books are easy to chuck in the player.

Been reading a self published series recently by Chris Nuttall, 'Ark Royal (1-3). Actually quite enjoyable - more 'Lost Fleet' than '2001', but slightly more depth to the characters than you may find in Lost Fleet. First one is quite cheap, check it out.

Halfway through Iain banks Inversions; but it just doesn't jell, I simply find it hard work, it plods, it's lethargic and I must be missing something: so convince me to pick it up again......

Not a classic - one of only a couple I haven't bothered to re-read... suggest move on elsewhere in the range if you are struggling smile
