Doing that without permission would be intellectual property theft, I think. Best get writing that grovelling letter!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but even with "your own" characters and story universe you will (as I'm sure you've found) find it nigh impossible to find an agent or publisher, so using someone else's stuff moreso.
So how did you get on with this project?
Positive communicaton with the family of the author of the original characters. If only I could finish the bugger, I see few issues So how did you get on with this project?

Excellent! So you've got a publisher lined up?
fk off! The family could either say "Yes" or "No". Either way, I can find a way forward from that.I know full well that a publisher will only say "No", so I'm putting off that particular encounter until I've found inner peace.

I could really use some help here.
I like the idea of self-publishing. I've written a children's book, paid a great illustrator, had it proof read, etc. I started to look at Amazon and (frankly) got utterly lost. I like the idea of print on demand. I'm happy to promote my book, I just want someone to handle the order-print-despatch side of things. I don't want to hold stock, I'd just like a cut from any sales. I need something simple.
Amazon directs me to CreateSpace but there's little info on how it actually works. Have any of you published authors used this? Are there better alternatives?
There are publishers who operate a print on demand model, but its not that efficient and product quality is variable, it might be worth creating digital editions of your title first to get some traction and then attract a publisher. I use a indian conversion house to convert print titles into ebooks, the same one used by many of the large publishers. Also check out iBook Author (if you have a mac) its an awesome bit of software, very easy to use and fantastic for Children's titles especially interactive titles.I like the idea of self-publishing. Before he died, my Granddad wrote down all of his experiences as a soldier in WWII. His handwriting became hard to read as he got older, so I went round to his house every Friday after school for a few weeks and typed it all out as he dictated to me. It's not a book per se and I can't remember all of the details of his story as it was five or six years ago now, but I'm sure there are folk on here who'd be interested to read it. I certainly am going to go and give it another read!
I've just had my first book published - albeit in an early access preview so only the first 3 chapters. It's a technical book teaching cross platform mobile app development.
The publisher approached me directly about writing a book, which is pretty awesome.
Only got a limited audience, they expect to sell no more than 8-10,000 copies, and it'll take a year to finish but worth it for the technical kudos in the mobile development community.

What's it called and what is it about?
I haven't got a name (beyond a working title) yet.It begins with the shooting of an armed drug dealer during an arrest. A bit of a storm ensues. A spurious community leader and politician-turned-media relations expert find they can make a nice little bit of filthy lucre by fomenting civil unrest, so do their best to whip things up in the media and community as the inquiry unfolds. There's quite a twist at the end.
Hope that makes some sense. I haven't even thought about a synopsis yet.

Thank you. It's a first draft; I will be leaving it or a few weeks before printing, reading and starting to edit.I am 50k words into my current book , my third , but the first on cars and motorsport . Best of luck with your writing and I hope they do give you a review - we all need as many of those as we can get, don't we?
Firstly, how is everyone getting on with their books?
Secondly, I have started writing my first book. Currently doing the first draft and have actually been able to let myself simply write. Its crap, but I can edit it later.
Written 6500 words over three evenings. I aim to do 2000 a time. The story is just flowing out of me. I'm creating it just based on a few paragraphs of ideas.
Its actually quite fun when you let go and just write it. Even managed to scare myself tonight as I wrote about an event in the dark. I then had to go down to the end of my garden an hour ago to get something out of the shed. Nearly pooped myself.

Well, I am now up to 114.000 words on Refuge of the Roads , the working title. It has involved my attending , and then writing about motor sport events as diverse as Santa Pod. Autograss, Shelsley Walsh, Silverstone , Cadwell and much more besides . This is just one part of the book , with the rest being a combination of motoring autobiography and opinion pieces . Another six chapters to do and at least three more events to write about.
Who knows , there might even be a website about the book , not that I would , or could mention it here .
