Please help me identify a book!

Hi all,

I'm looking for a book my girlfriend liked when she was younger.

I can't remember the whole title but all I can remember of it is:
"[some odd sounding name] Was Special"

It's about a boy who has an owl as a companion.
I think it's set in some foreign country and the owl helps him dig for/ find things???? But not sure.
I also think it dies in the end.

This was probably in the late 90's/early 2000s but it may have been an old book.
I also don't know if it was a "children's book" or just an adults book she liked when she was young.
