I made the resolution at the start of the year to read more. I have done pretty well and have now read all the books on my book shelf that I had bought and not read.

I prefer non-fiction books and there are some specific subjects I would like to read about and learn about. There are hundreds to choose from and the reviews on Amazon are often not helpful. Does anyone have any recommendations for really good books on the subjects below? I don't care how big or long they are as long as they are interesting.

  • First World War
  • Second World War
  • Cold War
  • The British Constitution & Political System
  • The American Constitution & Political System
  • Economics (a bit broad but one covering macro-economics)
  • The Middle East (modern history)

For WW2 I recommend Ill Met by Moonlight by W. Stanley (Bill) Moss and Operation Mincemeat by Ben Macintyre.

Air Power by Stephen Budiansky traces the development of air power from WW1 to the present day. Good book with good insight into aspects of the Cold War Eg nuclear deterrents

The Cold War by John Lewes Gaddis

Barbarossa by Alan Clark

The Most Dangerous Enemy by Stephen Bungay (Battle of Britain)

Not on your list of topics but Empire by Niall Ferguson is a great run through of the British Empire.

Happy reading
