Just finished the book and have mixed emotions.
The height of literature it is not, but it was a gripping read. The systematic collapse of a relationship was well drawn and I thought the image of the mid-West as a dust-bowl of poverty was well written.
The twist was very good and not sign-posted at all, but it went down-hill pretty quickly after that - the implausible stay in the lodge with the drifters and then the murder of Desi (although it was clever in that I am convinced the creepy actions of Desi were all in Amy's mind).
It was quite rushed and I was waiting for that eureka-moment where Boney would redeem herself and nail the psycho. In the end it was a bit anti-climatic, albeit it very unsettling. I suppose we are left thinking, who will be next - the unborn child?

k ending. I know - late coming in to this conversation, but have only just read Gone Girl (haven't seen the film). Found both lead characters completely unlikeable, but most of the book was quite a good read. However, like many, I was hugely disappointed with the ending. There seem to be a lot of suggestions for alternate endings out there in cyberspace, but most (IMHO) are weak and do ring true with the cleverness of the tale.
My alternate ending may not be terribly popular, but I see it playing out like this. Amy's dalliance with antifreeze some months previously has slightly damaged her circulatory system. During childbirth she ruptures a blood vessel in her brain and suffers a massive stroke. The baby is delivered well and healthy but Amy effectively ends up in "locked in syndrome" and has to rely on Nick to look after her and her child for the rest of he days. Not sure if Nick should go ahead and publish his book or if just lauding it over a helpless Amy would be enough.
